No foul! Here's the gear you'll want for waterfowl hunting

Sep 22nd 2017

With waterfowl hunting season underway, you may be asking yourself if you're prepared. Sherper's is here to help make sure you have the gear needed this season.

I need to make a call

Sherper's has a vast selection of duck and goose calls. Be sure to know what type of call you are looking to achieve and buy your duck or goose call accordingly. As a rule of thumb, single reed calls tend to have a greater scope in regards to sound control and volume. These are better suited for experienced hunters and/or use in windy/open water scenarios. Mastering the technique of using a single reed call is a bit more of a challenge, but has its advantages in volume and variety of sounds it can make. Double reed calls on the other hand are more ideal for beginners because they are easier to control and vary the sound. They are better suited for small waters or in situations where high volume is not needed.

Wood/hybrid calls tend to have a softer sound that some feel is more realistic. The Field Proven Calls Double Shot Hybrid Duck Call is the preferred wood/hybrid call of 2014 Wisconsin State Champion Duck Caller and Sherper's Vice President Rob Scherper.

Acrylic calls have a sharper, louder call. These are better for when you're hunting in windy areas or are trying to attract game from a long distance. Check out the Buck Gardner SlamPiece Acrylic Duck Call (single reed only), or the Buck Gardner Double Nasty 3 Acrylic Duck Call (double reed).

Finally, polycarbonate duck calls have a sound that's somewhere in between the wood and acrylic calls with the softness of the wood call and the sharpness of the acrylic call. Polycarbonate are the most affordable amongst the duck call options. The Field Proven Calls Single Shot Poly Duck Call is available at Sherper's, as is the Buck Gardner Double Nasty 3 SBT Polycarbonate Duck Call, which is virtually identical to the acrylic call of the same name, but is made of the more affordable polycarbonate versus the acrylic materials.

The Buck Gardner Wood Duck Polycarbonate Call and Duck Commander Teal Hen Duck Call are specialty calls also available at Sherper's.

Staying hidden

Avery Outdoor Real Grass is the ultimate concealment when hunting in the Midwest and in cattail marshes. Sherper's sells 4 pack bags of this waterfowl hunting necessity, which can be painted or cut to match your surroundings.

For further concealment, you'll want a blind. Check out the Rig'Em Right Waterfowl Low Rider II Layout Blind. The Low Rider uses no pins and can be set up in about 30 seconds. Its unique features and design make it one of the best blinds available. Also available is the Avery Outdoors Outfitter Blind which is portable, comfortable, and has convenient integrated holes to flag birds without exposing your body.

Invite the ducks to play with their "friends"

A great way to bring your target closer to you is by creating the illusion of security. Ducks will feel more confident in landing in your target area if there are other ducks present. Our realistic-appearing duck decoys will increase your chances of attracting your game.

Check out our collection of Avian-X decoys. These rubberized decoys provide for greater durability versus the previous plastic models. Sherper's has mallardwood duck, and blue wing teal decoys, among others.

Just because you're in the swamp, it doesn't have to feel like a swamp inside your waders

Get your hands on the new standard in cold water hunting waders. The Frogg Toggs Grand Refuge Waders are insulated and comprised of breathable materials as opposed to the increasingly outdated neoprene material. This is in keeping with the updates made to rain gear of the breathable material versus PVC/rubber. The breathable material has microscopic holes that will allow perspiration to seep out but will not allow liquid to enter. PVC/neoprene does not allow for this level of comfort as the perspiration will remain with you.

Sherper's has two versions of these waders available: the deluxe version for $279.99 and the Grand Refuge 2.0 for $229.99. The deluxe version has a bit more insulation and extra features.
